AI crawler audit vs. AI citation tracking: what each can and cannot tell you
What a technical crawler-access audit measures, what citation monitoring measures, and why neither one alone tells you whether AI search will cite your site.

The short answer
A crawler audit tells you whether AI search engines can read your site. Citation tracking tells you whether they do cite it. The first is deterministic and produces fixes; the second is a sampled measurement of outcomes. You need the audit to rule out technical blockers, and tracking to see whether removing them changed anything — neither explains the other on its own.
Five things people measure under “AI visibility”
- Technical-access audit — robots.txt per crawler, status codes, index and snippet directives, content in served HTML.
- Citation monitoring — for a fixed prompt set, which URLs an engine links as sources.
- Brand mentions — whether an answer names you, with or without a link.
- AI referral attribution — visits arriving from AI assistants, from your analytics referrers.
- Competitor citation tracking — which other domains are cited for the same prompts.
Comparison
| Crawler audit | Citation tracking | |
|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Can AI crawlers reach and read my pages? | Do AI answers cite or mention me? |
| Method | Fetch the site; evaluate robots.txt, headers and HTML | Ask an engine fixed prompts; record cited URLs |
| Repeatable | Yes — same site, same result | No — answers vary run to run; needs repeated samples |
| Actionable output | Specific technical fixes | Where you appear, and who appears instead |
| Blind spots | Index status, ranking, content quality | Why you were or were not cited |
Which to do first
Audit first. If a search crawler is blocked or a page is noindexed, citation tracking will report zero and tell you nothing about why. Once access is clean, build a baseline: 20–30 questions your customers actually ask, run against each engine on a fixed schedule, recording cited URLs, uncited mentions and competitor citations. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report (public preview) adds first-party citation counts for Microsoft's AI experiences — a partial view, not one that covers every assistant.
What AI Search Audit does today
- Free: the crawler-access audit — all 31 checks with evidence, the per-crawler matrix, and the pages it read and skipped.
- AI Search Fixer: Claude Code skills and agents that implement fixes in your repository, after your review. The next audit decides what is fixed.
- Pro: scheduled re-scans and history, so a regression in access is noticed.
- AI Visibility (citation check): AI Visibility is in beta and not yet open to accounts.
It does not report index status, rankings, traffic, or a “citation probability”. See pricing and the documentation.
What neither proves
- A clean audit does not mean you will be cited.
- A citation increase after a deploy is a correlation; engines and competitors change too.
- Mentions, citations and visits are three different outcomes — report them separately.
